Skincare order matters more than most people realize — especially after 40, when your skin barrier is more delicate and your products have to work harder to deliver results. The wrong order means wasted product, wasted money, and skin that isn't getting what you're paying for. Here's the exact order, morning and night, with the reasoning behind each step.
The golden rule of skincare order
The general rule is to apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency. Watery serums first. Creams and oils last. That way, the lightweight products can actually penetrate into your skin before heavier products create a seal on top. But there are a few specific nuances for mature skin. Let's walk through it.
The AM skincare routine order (morning)
Step 1: Gentle cleanser
In the morning, you just need to refresh your skin and remove whatever came off onto your pillowcase overnight. A gentle, cream or gel-based cleanser is perfect. Skip foaming cleansers — they're too stripping for skin over 40.

Step 2: Antioxidant serum (usually Vitamin C)
This is your morning glow step. Vitamin C brightens dark spots, protects against sun damage, and stimulates collagen production. It works best in the morning because it boosts the effectiveness of your SPF.

Step 3: Hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid or niacinamide)
A hydrating serum layered under your moisturizer dramatically improves how plump and hydrated your skin looks. Apply to slightly damp skin so the hyaluronic acid actually pulls water in.

Double cleansing is non-negotiable at night if you wear SPF (which you should be every day). Oil-based cleansers dissolve sunscreen, makeup, and the day's grime without stripping your skin.
Step 2: Gentle water-based cleanser
After the oil cleanse, follow with your regular cream or gel cleanser to clear any remaining residue.
Step 3: Exfoliant (1–3 nights a week only)
Exfoliation speeds up cell turnover, which slows naturally after 40. But more isn't better — over-exfoliation wrecks your skin barrier.
Look for: A chemical exfoliant with lactic acid (gentler) or glycolic acid (more potent). Skip gritty physical scrubs.

Step 4: Retinol (on non-exfoliating nights)

- Using retinol and exfoliant on the same night. Barrier destruction.
